Sookie explores her powers
The show seems to be building toward the ultimate battle between vampires and humans, though if the show continues another four seasons, as Michael McMillian aka Steve Newlin told Speakeasy earlier this week, we are curious why the showdown is happening now.
What We Enjoyed
The return of Russell. Bill and Eric are offered the chance to join Salome, Nora and Russell in their new vampire club. They decline and stress peaceful coexistence. We are more convinced than ever that the show's writers are secretly hoping to influence the Mideast peace process.
Later, after sipping Lilith's sacrosanct blood, the entire Authority is hopped up as though on LSD and is marching through the streets, ready to drain some humans. It looks as though with that single sip, the mainstreaming manifesto has gone out the window and there's a whole new reason for being in town. To be fair, we assume most world leaders probably make political decisions after nights like this. "You need to worry about you," says Russell, moments before chomping down. Denis O'Hare is perfection.
Sookie's dilemma. Struggling with whether or not to deplete her magic on purpose so she can be a regular human is a good touch.
Jason gets to have funny lines again! "Plug her in and charge her back up," he puts in earnestly after Sookie's magic seems to drain away. Then, later, "I don't know how to make lunch so I made you breakfast instead." Excellent, us too.
Hoyt and Jessica, Part 578. Hoyt clearly does not hate Jessica Hamby, but says he does anyway, because he's in initiation mode with his new fraternity friends.
Alcide and new hot werewolf = much better couple than him and Sookie.
Oh dear, Tara is a on a pole. And then her mother walks in. Just like John Goodman discovering Piper Perabo mid-strut down the bar in "Coyote Ugly." Pam looks on with what seems like approval. There's a warm and tender moment between the two before Pam realizes she just looks like Vampire Malibu Barbie without actually being Vampire Malibu Barbie.
"True Blood" getting nostalgic for itself with Arlene's wedding video. Lafayette and Jesus are still together, as are Jess and Hoyt. Aw. We miss how things used to be, too, Alan Ball.
What the Show Needs to Work On
Throughout every season, the show has been very consistent on where exactly evil and intolerance lie: in the trailers and convenience stores of lower income, less educated folks. We think the writers need to be reminded that evil is just as often perpetrated in carpeted, well-lighted offices by men and women with cut fingernails, to paraphrase C.S. Lewis. In other words, hunting those who are different from themselves is not exclusive to the realm of the downtrodden. Bigotry is everywhere, even and perhaps especially among the upper class and well educated.
Nora is annoying. It's like she's just memorized her lines in a ninth grade play.
We are still struggling to care about Lafayette's plot line, with his venturing back into the magical world he so desperately wants to leave behind.
Steve Newlin needs more airtime, please.
